Magdalena Arguelles was born in Iloilo City, Philippines and immigrated to the United States in the late 1960’s with her family. She  resides in Chicago, Il. After finishing pharmacy school in Boston, she studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her BFA. She has studied printmaking at Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy, Evanston Art Center in Evanston, Il and recently studied Mokulito at Art Print Residence in Arenys de Munt, Spain.

Her paintings explores memories of her childhood in Iloilo, City and how it shaped her as she assimilated into a new culture. These memories and impressions are incorporated within the context of the still life and the landscape. Visual impressions she has encountered throughout her travels and moments of daily life can also be seen throughout her work. She paints with water-based mediums, incorporating collage and printmaking techniques  on found supports to create the images within her paintings. Most recently, her focus has been on creating collages using paper waste to create images and exploring Mokulito.

At Aviario studio, I spent the week working with Mokulito, learning kitchen lithography and creating collages. The landscape setting of the Aviario and the well equipped studio space here allowed me to think and experiment with 3 forms of art making.
