Your residency is customized according to the duration you wish to stay, your artistic and aesthetic focus, and the outcomes you wish to achieve. Here, you can test what’s possible. And translate ideas into reality. Your stay can be a time of transition, working with experimentation, research, and new techniques. Or, your residency could be a time of realization, creating the physical outputs of your artistic process.
Residency durations are from 2 weeks to 6 months.

The studios
The studio was an old aviary converted into 5 differently equipped workshops, with facilities for printmaking, ceramics, wood, metal, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, and bookbinding. Artists can develop projects using various mediums and a combination of technologies. For more information about our equipment, download our Equipment List.

The quietest and cleanest place in the building. This room is for desk research and digital work, using only clean materials that do not contaminate the space. Here you will find our Arts and Design Library.

With all the facilities and equipment to perform techniques such as printmaking, screen printing, painting, and drawing, this workshop is set up for work in large format on most of the printmaking techniques.

Fully equipped to take a break: heat your meal, have a coffee, read a book, do some sketches, discuss the meaning of life and the universe.

Hammer, cut, screw, bend, weld, drill, sand, sharpen, engrave, squeeze, sculpt, glue, break, fix, mould, spray, plane, grind. Rocket science is allowed!

A place of chemistry. Here you can experiment, research, and create using ceramic techniques, with a full suite of equipment for working in large format at low temperature (1100 °C).

We have a dedicated public exhibition hall, within the Alfredo Keil Cultural Centre, located in the nearby town of Ferreira do Zêzere. Here, the Aviário Studio Exhibition Hall hosts temporary public access art shows throughout the year.
Your Stay
Aviario Studio has dedicated accommodation in the centre of the nearby town of Ferreira do Zêzere, less than 2 km from the studios.
Single occupancy and shared rooms are available.
The accommodation is a fully equipped house comprising a living room, kitchen, bathroom, WC, two double bedrooms, one couple bedroom, wi-fi, and paved outdoors area.
Supermarkets, a fresh market, pharmacies, post office, skatepark, public swimming pool and several cafes and restaurants are all within easy walking distance.
Within a few kilometres you can enjoy some of the best nature that Portugal has to offer. The beautiful Zêzere River, forests, undulating landscapes, and the important historical town of Tomar. Coimbra, the ancient capital city of Portugal, is less than an hour´s drive away. Lago Azul, the site for the World Wakeboard Championships is a 10-minute drive.
